Krankenhausklassifizierung
28 Jan, 2024 - Medizinische Informationen
On the internet, there are numerous hospital rankings such as "Top 10 Hospitals in Europe" or "Top 100 Hospitals in the World," but questions arise: On what basis is one hospital preferred over another? From whose perspective are hospitals ranked? Does mentioning a hospital in such rankings imply that all specialties and departments within it are of the same standard?
Unfortunately, these questions often lack objective answers. Most evaluations rely solely on the hospital's reputation, marketing capabilities, and the personalities treated there. However, finding a practical classification of hospitals that one can rely on when choosing the appropriate hospital is challenging.
Therefore, for treatment planners in Germany, we have created a classification of German hospitals based on data from over 1711 hospitals and their departments in Germany. The following factors were considered:
- The actual performance of these hospitals and the extent of improvement and development of their services over the recent years.
- The size of the hospital and the number of its rooms.
- Treatment outcomes in these hospitals and the rate of complications.
- Patient opinions and evaluations regarding the care and service provided in each hospital.
- The efficiency of the medical staff in these hospitals (qualifications, training courses, years of experience).
- The readiness of the hospital in terms of equipment and medical tools.
- The level of sterilization and cleanliness.
- The level of administrative organization and how patients are treated.
- Accommodation or lodging services and the level of rooms in the hospital.
To manage this amount of information, these factors were divided into two types:
- Emotional assessment.
- Realistic assessment.
All this information was obtained with the help of quality reports issued by the Federal Joint Committee and supplementary data from assessment and survey portals.
Emotional assessment refers to evaluating the hospital based on opinion and emotional impressions, including criteria such as satisfaction, recommendations, and comments on the quality of medical care, organization, and service.
Realistic assessment is based on four key figures from quality reports, and it is calculated based on the overall value "actual assessment." Different factors are distributed using specific proportions, with medical care and nursing care each accounting for 35%, monitoring for 20%, and services for 10%.
Hospitals are compared based on the overall value, which is the average of emotional and realistic assessments. The hospital's performance is calculated relative to its size, with the hospital scoring highest in each size category receiving a value of 100. The remaining values are standardized and converted based on this criterion, allowing hospitals to retain their ranking according to their size. The best performance is awarded to hospitals in each size category with a value of 100.
Thus, values were calculated based on the overall value, and based on this value, the hospital's performance was standardized and converted according to its size category.
